New Book Design

One of my favourite projects of the year was designing a 104 page booklet for Janine Hogben. She wrote a collection of "Snippets" from her life and travels and I had the opportunity to put them all together into a booklet. Janine had 200 A5 copies, perfect bound and printed, but these were not for sale. They were handed out to family and friends. This was a very interesting project to work on.

Recent Work - Business Card Designs

I have recently designed a few different business cards for various clients. I have done cards for a car valeting firm, an interior designer, a locksmith and a builder. Business cards are still an important business tool when you have a business where you are meeting new clients face to face. Every year, I do a lot of business cards.

Duns Play Fest - At a Glance Poster

One of the jobs I did this week, was to design a poster for Duns Play Fest 2021. All of the festival events are online this year, due to the pandemic. The client, Duns Players, wanted a poster that included all of the events, so that people could get a quick overview of what was planned. I used some of the branding that was previously created from last year, but I had to move elements around the page, due to the large amount of text. Overall, I think it looks good.

Galaxy Chocolate New Branding

I am a big fan of Galaxy Chocolate and I think their new branding is amazing! The use of colour is well appropriated and it reflects the way chocolate appeals to the senses. The white background is also a crisp new way to present a great brand. They have also used colourful scarves within their sub-branding which is a subtle device that exudes "Quality". When consumers buy Galaxy Chocolate they are buying into the rich brand. Well done Mars.

Christmas Market Poster Design

I designed this Christmas market poster for local community group A Heart For Duns, back in October 2019. They wanted something bright and colourful. This is what I came up with. The client was very pleased with the end result. The client sometimes design their own posters for certain events, but they often have a lack of images to put in their poster designs. I have tried to create my own images where possible, or I will sometimes use stock images.

I designed this poster in 2020 for a local community group called A Heart For Duns. They wanted something bright and cheerful, so this is what I came up with. I designed this while I was working for a previous employer. I think I created a good design that was on a limited budget.

The Scarf Company Logo

I designed this logo for The Scarf Company about 18 years ago and it is good to see they are still using it. The Scarf Company are based in Hawick in the Scottish Borders and I was asked to come up with a design that could also be used as a clothing label. So this is what was agreed. The Scarf Company sell their scarves all over the UK and abroad. They make lambs wool and cashmere scarves, gloves and hats. They have quite a large range of styles.

Is there a need for standardized Gluten Free labelling?

As I am a graphic designer and I am coeliac, or also spelled celiac, I have noticed that there seems to be a need for some standardization of the Gluten Free symbol. Some companies use the Coeliac UK symbol and others don’t. Perhaps the ones that use the CUK symbol are registered. Some simply say Gluten Free where others also have a symbol. Supermarket own brands have different symbols, which is understandable, but wouldn’t it be better if they all used the same symbol?

Even with a GF symbol, I still check the ingredients. I’m not expecting independent butchers or restaurants to use a symbol. A simple GF on a menu is enough, but with GF food that comes in packaging it should have a uniform GF symbol.

A Nutrition & Diet Resources UK leaflet states that: "Foods labelled 'Gluten Free' are suitable for all people with coeliac disease. Only foods that contain 20 parts per million (ppm) or less of gluten can be labelled as gluten free. The Crossed Grain symbol certifies products are gluten free and suitable for a gluten free diet."

But this still is a grey area. Should I only consume food products that use the crossed symbol?

Patak's Curry Sauce Rebranding

Patak's have rebranded their curry sauce which is a good refresh and I think it is in line with current food packaging trends to a less traditional image. This will appeal to a younger market and I'm sure will boost sales. They have also released a TV advert to go with it. Very good. However I have one small issue with their design. The Gluten Free symbol is a bit too far fetched. The Celiac Gluten free symbol should be a picture of a grain plant with a cross through it. There is no cross through the Patak's Gluten Free symbol and I think there is the room for it to be misleading.

New Banner Design

This week I designed a new banner for A Heart For Duns. They are a local community volunteer organisation who do many great things for the local Duns community. This banner is produced in conjunction with Duns Community Action Group. These 2 organisations have a community larder and fridge where anyone can leave food or take food, in order to reduce waste. There is also a Sentry Box where anyone can leave or collect books, DVD's and toys etc. This banner design was a very quick project to work on and they are a good client to get along with.

Barber Shop Signage

Last year I designed the shop front for a local barber client of mine. Roosters Barbers in Kelso have given me a fair amount of design work recently. They already had a logo, so I adapted it for use on a window and signage along the top.
